Typographed postcards of the legion in Russia

Introduction

These postcards were issued by the propaganda Section of the Czechoslovak army in Russia. Most probably, they were printed using the zincographic technique in the years 1917-1919. Despite the poor quality of the pictures, the postcards represent a valuable source on the history of the Russian legion.

The various series and their characteristics

Three different series of the postcards can be distinguished, differing in the appearance and color of the address side. For the purpose of this study, they are marked with capital letters M, C and H (attention - these letters do not appear on the cards!).

Series M

This series seems to consist of the first typographed postcards printed and comprises only four cards. The address side is printed in blue color and shows five address lines. The picture side is printed in blue as well. The large-sized Czech and Russian captions are on the left bottom of the address side. Appearance of the address side:

Series C

This series was probably the second printed. It consists of 16 cards. The address side is printed in black color and shows five address lines. The picture side is printed in black as well. The small-sized Czech and Russian captions are either on the left bottom of the address side or on the picture side. Appearance of the address side:

Series H

This series was probably the last printed. It may consist of 16 cards (15 are known so far). The address side is printed in brownish black color and shows four address lines. The color of the picture side varies between black and brown. The small-sized Czech and Russian captions are on the left bottom of the address side. Appearance of the address side:
